Mazda Motor Co. will recall more than 15,900 station wagons sold in Japan or exported to Australia and New Zealand for repairs of potentially defective brake systems, the automaker and Japan's Transport Ministry said Thursday.

The recall covers 11,730 Mazda Tribute station wagons and 4,183 Ford Escape station wagons, spokesman Katsumi Yoshitake said. Ford Motor Co. owns 33.4 percent of Mazda.

They were made in Japan between January and August this year.

About 9,000 of the vehicles -- 5,785 Tributes and 2,878 Escapes -- were exported to Australia and New Zealand, he said.

Defective brake components may result in damage to a rubber diaphragm and decrease brake power, the spokesman said, adding that no accidents have been reported so far
