09 mercury has brake pulse like warped rotor. I put new pads on a couple months ago, same calipers and rotors. Was stopping fine then in the last few weeks it will act like a warped rotor on a couple stops then go back to being OK for a couple more stops. The car jerks to a stop with no front wheel wander or if you take your hand off the wheel when stopping the steering stays normal. Took the caliper slide pins on the rears out cleaned them and coated them with some antiseize. I thought maybe the calipers were sticking, no change, it does it whenever. I don't want to throw money at the problem by guessing or buying a complete brake system, any ideas would be great. Thanks.
.. and lube the front slide pins too. Also all caliper slide pins use Permatex Ceramic Extreme Brake Parts Lube 24125 or Bendix Ceramasil Brake Parts Lube BBL20-S rather than standard antiseize. Made for the job and much more effective and long lasting.
The "pulsing" is intermittent because rotor runout increases with heat (the more you use it the hotter it gets). A small bit of runout when cold quickly becomes out of spec when hot.
Starting out cold from driveway, car jerks at stop, then it's fine for the next three or four stops then it jerks maybe once or twice. I slam the brakes for an instant and it seems to go six stops then jerks again, then it does it very randomly. I didn't do the front pins yet because I'm thinking if the car is stopping with my hands off the wheel the steering would wiggle from the jerking. Could the calipers pistons be sticking, I turned the rotors and didn't notice any runout, checked the wheel bearings. It acts like a bent rotor but if it's bent or warped it wouldn't do it intermittently. The pedal doesnt pulse like a warped rotor. The only thing I haven't done was the front pins yet. New rotors, calipers, pads, and hardware are about 700 bucks but I have decent rotors and pads are new. Also I noticed the rear pads before were worn on a slight angle leading me to think the rear calipers were applying crooked somehow, which is why I thought it was pins. But with lube they move easily now. I'm out of ideas.
I'm guessing I'll have to break down and replace everything, it's very intermittent but it's really getting annoying. I know what I'm doing on the weekend now. Just hate putting all that money into the car. But it's cheaper to but a whole kit than buying it piece by piece.
