hi, i got this oil squirting problem on my 66 ranchero. nothing special you would say, but it is:

the oil seems to squirt only if i floor it (it is a pro-street ranchero), which means that i can't check it in the garage. it apears to squirt from the left hand side of the engine towards the steering column/pitman assembly. first i thought it were the valve cover gaskets, but changed them and no oil comes through there. also, spark plugs aren't dirty nor are the top sides of the headers, just the undersides. you would say it comes from between the cyl. heads and the block. but i doubt that for these reasons:

A) pressurized oil mounts up to the heads through the pushrods and leaks back depressurized through the oil return channels, so no squirting possible there i would say.

B) even if so, the oil return channels are located front and rear of the head and not in the middle, where the oil squirts out apparently

C) i checked the filter and there's nothing on there either.

D) no oil in coolant, no overheating...

i'm gonna check the pan bolts later on, but then still, it shouldn't squirt out there like that...

any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated

Hi 302junkie, how about the oil pressure sender ?
if it happening when your driving the oil could be getting blown towards the rear.
I would give everything a good wash and take it for a spin .Then check to see where the fresh oil is.
just an idea.

think i found it, the oil pan bolts towards the rear were a bit loose, so i thightened them up and some oil dripped from between the pan and the block so maybe there was a crack in the gasket. took it for a spin and still oil, but a lot less, so i'm changing the oil pan gasket right now (ever tried to get an oil pan off a 66 ranchero? jeez... swaybars off, motor mounts loose, jack it up till wheels almost off the ground... but got it out in the end.

the pan is an aluminum shi*** aftermarket one, so the boltholes are pressed up deeper then the rest of the pan.... will have to rectify that 2morrow. pretty confident it was that though, since the oil sender is before the filter and the filters clean. also, it was just the undersides of the headertubes and the steering gear housing that were soaked, nothing else, so my money's on the gasket.

Good luck getting the sump to seal without taking engine out an turning it upside down, i have attempted it 4 times on my windsor an its a pig!! Still have a leak!

pressurised sump.. most likely oil out the dipstick tube..
I cant see a sump pan gasket spraying oil.. unless you got too much sump pressure.. which can mean too much ring wear.
Do a compression test..
if your only slightly worn out try a breather oil cap to let some excess pressure escape.. the Zip tube ( hose that runs from rocker cover.. if you have one that is) on it now is only 3/8 line and may not be enough to let pressure escape.. check to make sure also that you pcv valve (located rear of intake) and screen are working and or not blocked
