I have had my XE van for seven years now, despite many upgrades it is getting tired, and I would like to upgrade.

It looks like the XF vans extend up to 1992, then the XG which looks the same before the XH. I am wondering what mechanical changes have been made to these vans and what models are the best buy.

like, when does efi and the 4.0L motors appear in these vans. Are there any factory Xr8 models? Do any have higher ratio (3.45 etc) LSD disc rear ends etc.

This aplies to the utes but I am sure the Pannos would be the same;

XG: Carryover suspension, steering etc. (all power I think). 4.0l engine as for EB sedan range along with 4-spd electronically controlled auto. Basically an XF with updated driveline.

XH: New front structure from windscreen forward, this brought with it the K crossmember front suspension (EA-EL sedans) with the strut-like coilover, long spindle, rack & pinion steering etc. Also allowed for the introduction of V8 engine option. The I6 had the EF-EL induction setup. I think both XR6 & XR8 available as the ute, don't remember there ever being an XR series Panno though!

Diff ratios ??????

XH considered to be the best (by far) of the X-series.

The V8 wasnt available till the XH Series II, which was in Oct 1997. An XR6 or V8 model wasnt available in the Vans :dead:

A v8 option has never been available in the XH range pano's.

As far as i know too, the drive line for the I6's from the XG models of 93' till the XHII models of 98' are exactly the same.

This diff ratio of mine is 3.23 and is around 3.45 for XR's (i think) but there were no XR model panos (yet :s4).

Thanks for the replies. It looks like panel van design is somewhat conservative compared to the sedans.

Has the rear suspension layout changed much through the models?

I'd like a modern V8 van, this would require a conversion. The only hassles are usually things like engine mounts. The XH would fit the XR8 mounts, but what about the XF-G?

XF's and XG's cannot be fitted with a V8 unless you have an engineers report because they are not as strong in the front end as XD-XE's and they weren't standard. But a V8 will bolt straight into them.

The rear has stayed the same, XH2's have a EL front xmember so the engine mounts should bolt in(I may be wrong..), will the XH/EL xmember fit XF/G.
I'd buy the XH2 model to save all the hassle's, XF/G isnt much different from what you got now...including the noisy plastic dash rattles!
