My parents had a '73 Pinto Squire wagon, and I can still remember the color code; 3B Light Blue. It had a MT and 2L engine, and was a lot of fun to drive and a good-looking little car. I have fond memories of that car, from getting my driver's license to it's demise in '84. We actually pulled a outboard runabout with it. I'm sure that shortened it's life. My dad wouldn't let me change the oil any more often than the prescribed 4M miles, and filters every other time, as was the custom then. It burned so much oil in the end that I was running 50 weight racing oil in the winter with no need to change the oil because it used it so fast. At the end, plastic inner fender components were falling off of it (MN winters), and the floorboards were rusted out so that the carpet was the only thing that kept your feet in the cabin. The final straw came when a rear wheel bearing went. You could smell the axle fluid burning as it hit the hot bearing-less rear end. I "traded" it in on an '84 Escort with the carbureted HO 4 cyl. and 5-speed. Another great car. The only driver car mistake I ever made was trading that in on an '86 300ZX Turbo.
My favorite Pinto story. While I was in the Navy, I noticed down by the repair group a red pinto wagon with a shaker top hood scoop claiming 429CJ. I kinda laughed it off and paid no more attention to it, 'til one summer day the owner and his buddy was out by the car, the full nose flipped and a 429 shoe horned into a very tight spot. As I walked by, I then noticed what I missed the first time, wheelie bars with signs of use in the back.
