Hello all,

Regarding what I did to change my coolant... but now the damn car is Hotter than ever before!!

Usually on a hot day (like today).. it would sit between AL (on NORMAL) and sometimes climb to MA. Today it climbed to OR and was on its way up. So I pulled into my house.. let it cool.. drained some of the radiator via the thermo hose and added another 2 litres of coolant (total of 7.5 litres of coolant).

I was driving around tonight (its about 27-29c) and it was on AL, but nudging MA...

What gives? I changed the coolant cos its summer.. but now its running hotter!!

I really need some help cos I don't want to blow a head gasket or anything...

are both your fans working? they should be going hell for leather if the temp gets up past the AL in normal...

Yeh what he said. Failing that, maybe the thermostat's cacked itself and isn't opening....

sounds like it could be a sneaky airlock... take the cap off and try raising the car up on one side with your jack.. let it down and see if it takes some more water

Thanks for the fast replies. The one thing I love about this fordforums community is everyone helps when someone is in need and is stressed.. thumbs up to all of you :bsr:

To answer all the questions:

Yep, both fans are absolutely HAULING when it gets hot.. they are going flat chat.. so they seem to be working ok.

The thermostat was changed about a month ago, pre-tested and has worked ok so far..

Airlock.... It may be that! I'm not sure what the process for refilling and bleeding air off is.... Can I do what tibbo suggested? Which side should I jack the car up on?

Coolant actually makes a motor run hotter if the cooling system is sub-standard or has another problem. All to do with the surface contact area of pure water being better than coolant because of molecular heat exchange efficiency, ie the wetness of the stuff. Lots of race cars run a wetting agent instead of coolant for that reason.

So going to new coolant and it runs hotter highlights another problem, perhaps thermostat and/or radiator core.

For a quick fix, drain the coolant into a container for later on and exchange it for pure RO water if you can or tap water and take it for a drive. Guaranteed you will get a big drop in temp, enough to get by, but you will need to track down what the underlying problem is. Doubt it is an airlock.

I'll go for the air pocket. If it was OK just before the coolant change and not afterward, then it has to be something simple.

1. Check your radiator cap is sealing properly.
2. Burp it by turning the heater on full bore, take it for a short spin. Should notice the water level in the o'flow tank drops. If that doesn't work, jack it up (make reservoir side the highest) and run it with the cap off.

A good tip for next time is to jam an asprin (not soluble) in the thermostat to hold it open. When you start up, the thermo is open till the aspro dissolves and this will help expel any air in the system.
