Well, sortof. The reason I was asking is because the US Escort shares the front suspesion with my car the Topaz, with just a wider track. When I saw how similar the shell of the Escort from UK was to the one from the US, I figured that might be a source for some front suspesion pieces and maybe some upgraded front brakes.
I did find a company called British American Transfer (
www.batinc.net), and they specialize in offering Eurpoean components for American counterparts. THey supply parts for the Escort, XR4Ti, Contour, and Focus. According to Bat, the first two years of the US Escort used the same front spindle as that of the UK Escort. In 1983, the US Escort switched to a larger spindle from the Tempo. BAT offers the same high perfomance struts that are available for the UK Escort for the US Escort, but you have to purchase their adapter kits to get them to work. They also offer cross-drilled brake rotors, but they are the same size as factory on US cars. So, it looks like I'll have to look up the food chain (Taurus) for upgraded brake components.
My new quest is to find out about the transaxle in the Mk III Escort RS Turbo. In the states, the transaxles that were available were the MTX-2 ( 4-spd, avail. in the Escort/Tempo ), MTX-3 ( 5-spd, avail in Escort/Tempo/Taurus ), and the MTX-4 ( 5-spd, avail in the Tempo/SHO ). These transaxles were phased out starting with the ??? in the 91 Protoge based Escort and in 95 with the introduction of the Contour/Mystique/Mondeo.. which feature the new MTX-75, now used on the Focus as well.
I've seen a website out there about a guy who is turbocharging a US-spec 88 Escort GT. He has snagged an LSD from a Mk III RS Turbo. He doesn't know if it is going to work or not. My question is this... is the transaxle that was available on the MkIII RS Turbo the MTX-3 5-spd that was available here in the states??? The search continues for the answer.
