BALCO'd: Range Rover Gets 50 Percent Power Boost From V8 Diesel

Inside Line

Ain't no mountain high enough, now that the Range Rover has a V8 diesel under the hood that makes 272 hp.

GAYDON, England — Land Rover has replaced the top V6 diesel engine in its flagship Range Rover SUV with a V8 unit that develops a staggering 54 percent more power than the old 177-horsepower V6 unit.

The new 272-hp V8 diesel also offers 64 percent more torque than the unit it replaces and has a 0-60-mph time of 8.4 seconds. That's more than four seconds quicker than the outgoing TDV-6, and without compromising fuel economy, which is a combined average of 25.1 mpg.

Other new features include stronger brakes, a revised suspension for improved handling, and the addition of the company's Terrain Response system for the first time. Terrain Response allows the driver to select one of five settings depending on terrain, using a rotary switch. Supercharged models also get an electronic rear differential. Inside, buyers get the option of cooled front seats, and all models boast improved cargo capacity.

The new engine is matched to the six-speed, state-of-the-art ZF "intelligent shift" automatic transmission, which is already used on gasoline Range Rover models. The suspension setup is similar to that of the Range Rover Sport Supercharged, and large Brembo front brakes are standard.

The revised model hits showrooms toward the end of the year, with U.K. prices ranging from about $103,000 to $122,000.

What this means to you: A V8 diesel is just what the doctor ordered for really capable off-roading. We'll see if this truck can pass a urine test.
