I'm trying to eliminate possible causes of low compression in one cylinder on my 3.9mpi.

If the rings were the problem, would the spark plug be likely to be oiled / blacker than the others?

All the plugs were in identical condition.

You can have low compression if rings are broken or warn and oil control rings are o/k as well as still good clarence.
Is there much blow by.Then try under load.Ingear /drive in auto brakes "hard" on and put under load see how much blo by comes out filler cap or breather hose? Don't do too often and be carefull. If more come out [some will] lots, yes the compression rings are R/S! Best done by two people.

How often should you change plugs? should I change the plugs because they haven't been done for about 50,000km but the car is running sweet as?
