I havn't had a timeing light over it for a while so does anyone think that that may be my problem

Check your Air Flow meter. Ford used a Vane Type Air Flow Meter on the XF which has a flap inside which movies according to the engine vaccum telling the computer how much air is comming into the motor... Sometimes the Meter get stuck cousing high or rough idle....etc.

i had a look at air flow meter yesterday and it is open about about 5-10 mm. Is this suppose to be like this or is it supposed to close all the way when the car is stopped

Is your XF on gas... If so, it may have backfired at some stage on starting.

There is a spring in ontop of the airflow meter that is set at a specific tension. Backfiring usually wrecks the spring and it doesnt shut the flap properly...

This can also happen as the thing ages as well.. I know there are a few places that can retension them correctly. This might be a place to start.

I had the same prob with my XF. i.e. all of the the sudden it started idling like shit. I checked and tried everything I could think of. In the end, when
I was about to give up and pull the head off suspecting a valve prob I took the rocker cover off and watched the motor idle. I noticed that one pushrod didn't seem to be doing much to push the valve. It turned out that i had a "Mushroomed" lifter. I went to my local wrecker and paid $5.00 for a new lifter and replaced it. Problem fixed. Apparently this is a pretty common fault. Worth a try I guess.
