hello guys i need some info on how to seam weld as i fought my rhd guard on my escort was in good nick but i found out its very very flexiable and the bottom part is bent to bad to be fixed. iam just wonderin if i drill all the seams out do i use a drill bit but do i drill right through or just enuff for the seam weld to become loose. and with a seam welder how does it work ie is it just a pole that i push against the lip to be welded or is there more to it.

cheers

seam welding refers to a 'full stich' weld..similar to a bead weld but on two edges creating a seam..What your are refering to as Aussiblue has already said is a 'spot weld'..A spot welder is just two electrodes that arc on the job ie your car body.. Hand held ones are bullky and are shit to get into small places.. What you will have to do once you have sprung the spots is to 'plug' weld the holes and grid them back to flat

oh yer spot welds my mistake. oh coz the left hand guard was changed over before and it was spot weled by the looks of it. so by "plug weld" would that mean i make a holes in the new guard then mig weld on the holes to the body then grind the weld flat yer would it be still strong the way its welded on?? how did they do them from the factory must be some kind of welding tool.

yeh thats it ,, drill a few holes (5mm is heaps) and Mig weld thru the new hole onto your body, that in turn will fill/'plug' the hole you drilled but actually fuse the panel on.. Then get out the grinder..

TIP: have a big bucket of water with a wet rag handy....as you plug each hole quench it in water to reduce the heat distortion.. Same goes when you grind it, use a sanding disc not the grinding wheel and you won't even need filler
