Hi all,
the last few days, my rear driverside wheel has been getting squeaky, not when braking, but just normal driving.

Its usually worst between 5 - 65km/h. Going round corners (putting force I guess on the wheel) often stops it, until its upset again. It happens under acceleration, braking and just normal driving.

Applying the handbrake slightly while driving can stop it 90% of the time, but on release, usually after a couple seconds, the squeaking starts up again.

Using normal brakes doesnt stop the whining either, well, not every time.

Like I said, its getting worse and worse, is annoying as well as embarrassing.

I had my car serviced the other day, in which they did a tyre rotation.

I'm not sure what to make of it. Obviously not the brakes, because it would squeak only when stopping. Wheel bearings? Why would the hand brake stop the noise?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wont get a chance to talk to the mechanic who serviced the car till monday, and I wouldnt mind having a look at it myself first.

cheers

btw, AU1 XR6

possibly the calipers are sticky, they must build up with gunk and crap.
My old xf had that problem, but i snapped the old diff, and got a low km diff, which came with good calipers, and it wasn't there after that.

One thing I forgot ot mention, is during the service they tighten the hand break cable. Is it possible its out of allignment and lightly rubbing (slightly on) causing it to squeak?

Like I said, the noise goes away if I fiddle with the hand brake.

I'll take the wheel off today and check it out anyway.

cheers

I'm not sure about AU's but E series Falcons have somewhat a a cheap warning system of when the pads need to be replaced, where the pad has a little steel flap, when the pads are wrn enough it makes light contact with the rotor causing an irritating squeal like what you are describing. Check your pads.

Yeah, Thats something else thats a possibility.
Wouldnt it only squeak under braking not all the time?

You may have managed to get a small rock on the brake pad so now it is between the disc and pad, check your disc rotors for scoring and uneven wear.

I got an AU1 XR6, even the same color.. Anyways that beyond the point..

Mine was doing the same thing.. I got mine servicesd they tightened the hand brake cable and the noise started. Just dealt with it, as I was getting new rotors and pads soon anyways.

After I had put in new rotors and pads, and re-tightened the handbrake cable on it got worse,

took it to a brake specialist, and they said that the handbrake shoe (pads) had worn actually the rear driver side, had nothing left. That got replaced and now no more squeak..

Take a look at that.. It sounds exactly like the same problem I had..

I also have the same problem - I just pull the handbrake up when moving and it gets rid of the sound for 5 or 10 minutes.

I have also heard this same sound on many Commodores (VT-VY), BA Falcons/Fairmonts. I think it is a characteristic of the floating style handbrake shoes in the rear discs.

Yep - got new shoes and it went away for a while, but it's back again. I even had ford check it last service (which was last week) and whatever they did only fixed it for 2 days.

Easiest solution is just turn the stereo up!

I cant here a thing if my windows are up
down though, its annoying, even louder if driving beside a wall or something to reflect the sound back at you.
Sometimes its a squeak, other its dull grinding sort of sound.

hi i have a 99 mustang gt , that does pretty much the same thing..... but its more of a squall than a squeak, dosn't do it all the time thou. if i work the hand break a couple of times it will go away, its very annoying. i put new pads a while back and the noise stopped for a while ,but now its back
