When you see one of these ugly muthers coming at you, Look out!

Figures from the US national Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A pedestrian struck by a large van is three times likely to die as a pedestrian hit by a car. A pedestrian hit by a large SUV is twice as likely to die as one hit by a car.

The probability of a head and thoracic injury is substantially greater than a car, which tend to cause leg injuries.

figures: fatalities per 1000 crashes:approx
car: 45
compact SUV: 80
compact pickup truck: 85
Large SUV: 110
Large Pickup: 118
Large Van: 130

What about trucks and busses? Or are SUVs worse? LOL people who have a problem with SUVs because of their size, never mention trucks or busses

I remember an article in Car & Driver a year or two ago where they ridiculed the hysteria in some of the press over DaimlerChrysler's new "SUV" that weighed 5000 pounds and how it was irresponsible to have a vehicle so large on sale to the general public and why would any family want one. The SUV in question was the Unimog.

Thats about the same weight as a Patrol, Landcruiser, Tahoe, Touareg or Cayenne, lighter than a Maybach though, no-one complains about those LOL

I do when I am stuck behind them in traffic.

Trucks and buses move the economy along.

SUV move the paranoid bourgeousie from their domicile to their childrens school. I suppose it's unneccessary to point out how many pedestrians are around schools at the same time, or who they are.

Thats right, because only SUVs can kill children, if it were a sedan or hatchback these accidents would not occur of course, and SUVs are the ones that are seen driven "peter Brock" style around suburban streets. And we dont not need to teach our children to keep off the road, and only cross at crossings, and get in and out via the kerb side door because if it were not for SUVs, nothing bad would happen in the first place! Now how do i do one of those sarcastic face things?

What does American figures have anything to do with us?? It's just like the bullbar thing- dont ban bullbars, ban stupid pedestrians. Which is pritty much all it comes down to. Comes down to common sense and not being in such a rush all the time

yeah because its always the pedestrians fault too. i just don't think that it is at all practical or justifiable that mum and dads in suburbia need to own a large SUV or 4WD Wagons, oh no thats right you own them because they:
Are so fuel efficient?
Handle so well?
Have all that Power?
or is it because there only 60 to 80 grand to buy?
seems like they have alot going for them.... ya right

Maybe it's the thinking that if I'm to be involved in a crash at all I would like to be in the biggest and heaviest vehicle that I can (just about) afford and still be (sort of) practical as a family car.

This theory works fine unless the crash involves another large & heavy vehice or something immoveable. Your sure better off than in a tin can disposable car yet because of the poorer vehicle dynamics your less likely to be able to avoid the accident in the first place.

So true. It's a real shame they're so much more likely to roll, don't corner and take sooooo much longer to stop.

You'd be a little less likely to hit something if you weren't driving a 2 1/2" tonne behemoth. You're also just that little bit less likely to kill everyone in the vehicle you hit.

Utilitarianism has to kick in at some point.

My 2c.

I can tell you a LR Discovery with Active COrnering enhancement corners much better than many sedans i have driven, most SUVs i have driven stop quicker than the sedans I am used to (unless they are a performance sedan) acceleration is plentiful on many SUVs, and fuel consumption lets just say i read an article today about the fuel consumption of the new Hummer H2 on Drive, and they concluded that a Falcon GT could be as bad on some occassions, now thats a Hummer!

Yeah, sorry I had a bit of a memory lapse there. The actual weight of the Unimog was 13,000 pounds or nearly 6 tons! C&D were reacting to an article in the New York Times, one of the concerns was the Unimogs were to be sold "mainly in urban areas" - yes, to local government departments as works trucks!

The Territory at least is a progressive SUV, with a car like nose, and decent dynamics that might allow it to avoid alot of these criticisms, and still meet the users rational requirements.

Its laughably absurd that the same people who are so for freedom of choice when it comes to buying cars which are extremely high powered hold such facist ideas when it comes to an 'excessive' car variant which they dont themseles own.

You righteous cruisaders who think SUV's and bullbars are the cause of all the worlds problems make me sick.

Wake up and get a clue.

Some of these People owning these "SUVs dont even do any off road driving they just want it coz Its big and if they have an accident they think they wont get hurt. but it all comes down to pedestrians and motorists we all have to look out for each other and dont do stupid things. doesnt matter if u get hit by a car or 4wd youll be really screwed up. but in the case of a 4wd hitting a car then the car loses.

I dont see too many SUV drivers driving like that, except one try hard SUV did that to me in the Grange the other day, it was a Tribute or something gutless like that, I asked him why he was doing that, and highbeaming me after overtaking him....apparently its because i had my "wanker" lights on and he didnt think that it was necessary. he had a child in the back, what a responsible father, dont you think?
But I find the majority of SUV drivers are no worse than the majority of sedan drivers.
