Hey,

Im currently thinking of buying a early 90's 300zx. Just wondering if you guys could give me some information on what goes wrong with them and NO im not going to turn it into a ricer with some stupid loud exhaust and stickers all over it!

I currently have an EB XR8, which i still plan to keep!

They are a reasonably reliable thing provided the previous owner didn't wring the ring off it. The turbo models have heat issues in the engine bay as twin turbo + **** all cooling = dramas. As with any import, check it's history and look for accident repairs. Also check the wear on the steering wheel and pedals - telltale signs of an odometer change if the km's seem a bit low...

From what I have seen, it's the gearbox and clutch that tend to be the first problem with these models. Brakes may need replacing as well depending on km and condition.

They are a real steal at the moment, and you will be able to pick up a great bargain on one if you get in quick before the new 15 year rule changes come into play.

Happy hunting!

too expensive to maintain. a guy from work wanted one and his mechanic told him to stay well away from them. they may look good but have a few issues with heat and space. A simple timing belt change is a disaster.

Yeah really hard to maintain those cars. I had a mate that had one had to get it serviced a fair bit, dunno maybe he just got a dodgy one but otherwise its a nice car, goes allright. Look under the car usually there maybe drift damage if the previous owner was into that....

as everyone has said they are too expensive to maintain. any part (no matter how small) will be in the hundreds of dollars. that said, if you've got the cash and thats what you want, go for it. You only live once.

My best mate has one, it has 515hp at the treads, he really has problems with little parts that go in it all the time, switches and relays, all parts are expensive but he has pretty much sorted it out now, it came to that age, he is actually selling it, I think for around late 20's, he did a full interior retrim and it has a great stereo.

hmmmm... maybe i might stay away from them then and just keep my XR8. But i really dont have to money to spend if things go wrong, the XR8 i have has had not one problem since ive had it *fingers crossed*. Very reliable motor the windsor is!

I still have to do more research though on these cars, but there are very nice and the chicks love em!!!!!!!

I love the 300zx :D

But yeah, everyone is right...they cost heaps to repair and you can get pretty bad heat damage. You can avoid that by treating it right tho, Buy a turbo timer or run it in neutral for 5mins after a spirited run. Another option (and cheaper to insure) is to grab the Aus spec version - sure it won't have the turbo, by the history is usually more solid and they come in the 2+2 version (which I like better anyway)

You can regain some of the speed lost in not having a turbo by adding some performance parts... either way its an expensive road...nice car tho :)

The 300ZX would weigh the same or more than the XR8. I think the 300ZX weighed around 1700kg - so it would clearly be slower than the Windsor. The turbo version might be a little quicker, but in the end, if you get the 300ZX, you'll be downgrading to a car that is less practical and has similar/less performance and costs more to maintain. Spend the spare cash on freshening up the EB.

btw whats this 15 yr rule thats coming into place that was mentioned above???
Cars over 15 years dont need compliance plates. (=big savings) And anyone can import them
But people are now asking for that to be changed, so all imports need compliance (=higher cost for imports)

If you want to spend some money, upgrade to a newer XR8, it may impress a few more people, (or the certain people you want to impress).
