So I'm using my old mustang to teach my friend how to drive stick and twice now he's gotten it stuck in gear so badly that I need to hammer on the shift linkage under the car to get it loose again. Here's how he does it.
1. parking brake is on
2. car is in gear with clutch in, engine running
3. clutch is released
4. car stalls
5. Shifter won't release whatever gear it was in when stalled.

It's at this point that I take over, test the shifter, release the brake, try to roll the car to get the gears loose again, fail, then open the hood and hammer on the linkages using whatever long-and-heavy-pipe-like-object happens to be around. (steering lock club works good:hy:)

My question is...is this okay? has anyone else had this happen? what could cause this? The significance of the problem has me somewhat perplexed.

Check for wear on linkage and overhaul if needed , check g/box oil level and clutch clearance o.k ? Clutch centre plate dragging ?

Thanks R.S. the fluid's been topped off (it needed it) and I adjusted the clutch, no problems so far.
