Hi, I have a 1992 Tempo 2.3L Automatic Transmission. When i first start and drive the car (engine cold) transmission shift's fine, after driving a while (engine hot) transmission shift down to 1 and won't shift more also speedometer stop working. But if i stop the car for a while and drive it again, transmission shifts fine and speedometer work again for a while, I've check Fluid Level (Ok). Any one can help me pls.

Speed sensor really does little to that transmission, it's still the old school type with zero electronic control. The speed sensor only aids PCM engine control there and not trans, it's governor type and the load is detected by throttle amount and mechanical linkage there too.

My guess probable wear to let trans quit shifting once fluid gets hot to leak more.

Been a while since I did one. Had to go back and look at the design. That's the ATX transmission.

The plastic drive gear on one end of the differential is probably bad. It drives both the speedo unit and the governor, if it starts skipping teeth from wear you will lose both the speedo and shifting.

Pull the bottom pan off and look at the big differential you'll see as the most prominent part, the plastic gear is on one end of it.

If tore up, the driver side axle has to come out then the cover that axle plugs into, then the differential can come out without removing the transmission.

I followed your advice amc49 and removed the bottom pan, took out the fluid filter and found pieces of plastic inside, obviously something broke inside and the pieces ended inside it. Also checked the governor by removing it completely and it was ok. The plastic pieces found inside the filter couldn't be from the VSS drive gear because the gear is black and the pieces are not. Took some pictures to give a better idea.

Any idea what could be broken ?

I think amc49 is still correct. Try rotating th differential and looking closely at the drive gear on the diff. Even where splined to the diff.

I'd look closer at that diff gear, sure looks like pieces of it in the pan. Make sure car is well locked in place not to roll and then take out of park to roll the diff around to look at the other side, you may get a surprise. Take that plastic gear and try to rotate it on the diff, looks like a piece of that plastic is a locator tab, with those broke off the gear will then slip on diff case to not drive the other two. Could happen when it gets hot.

If that is the governor drive gear that broke your transmission will not come out of
first gear. That is the way it works. That is not your biggest problem. you need to find out
why it broke in the first place so it won't happen again. Good luck.

Today i got under the car and turned the differencial by spinning the left front wheel, as the speedo gear turned i saw that in has three broken lugs, only one is intact but out of it's place. So definitely this is the problem, Thanks amc49, So i'm gonna order a new Gear (part # E8FZ17285A) and two ATX axl seal (part # E1FZ-1177-A). Hopping any one can explain the procedure to remove the differencial , extract the Bearing and assemble the hole thing again. Thank you.

Told you how in posts 5 & 6. The bearing then pulled off with a puller. Goes back together easily, nothing to have to set like gear or whatever. There may be shims behind that driver side cover that the bearing on that side plugs into, don't misplace them.
