Hello everyone,

I recently had my valve body gasket replaced on my 2000 xls after I noticed some irregular shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. The tranny would over-rev before shifting and at times would cause the O/D light to blink. I drove it for about two weeks before bringing it to a trans shop.

I was told that it was the valve body gasket and he performed the work after tellng me that he could not guarantee that it would fix the problem. Of course this did not fix the issue and it still does not shift correctly. He stated that the trans was perminately damaged and that it will probably need a rebuild at a later time. I was charged $300 for the work. He stated that he did not drive the truck before hand because it was low on fluid. He used a diagnosic machine to resolve the problem. He showed me the damaged gasket, and I could see that it was blown on one side. What kind of daage could it cause? Does anyone think that the problem may actually lie in the valve body, a part or whole unit? What should I do?

My 2000 Exploder is in the Shop right now. Same problem. The tech open the trans for me and showed me the damaged caused by the heat build up. I chose to have my rebuilt for $2300.00.

I hope you have better luck.

Exactly same problem I am having 99 Xls 48000 miles. It's shifting strange from 2nd to third. They replaced gasket for 271.00. I pulled the vehicle off the lot, and had exact same problem. They kept it for another day. Told me the valve body would have to be replaced at a cost of 471.00, however they would not assure me this would fix problem. I opted not to have valve body replaced. They flushed tranny fluid. It worked great for a couple of days. Now same problem. I've currently taken my explorer to a transmission specialist. I post the results.

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer sport 4X4 and is in the shop right now with the same problem. I would really appreciate any current news on fixes or info regarding the valve body gasket.

Thanks

Looks like bad news for us. Specialist is telling me the transmission needs to be repaired...1500.00 to 1800.00 dollars. He does not believe valve body itself is problem.

Just had my 99 Ford Explorer in for the 2nd time to replace the Valve Body Gasket. The first replacement occured at 40K miles. The second 80K. This time, I went to a very reputable private transmission company and had the valve body replaced with an aftermarket redesign. They told me that the transmission would keep blowing the gasket unless the valve body was replaced with a redesign. Total cost $596.00 for the work. The price of the valve body alone was $318. So far, it works great. We'll see in another 40K.
