I am interested in buying an XY-XB 6 cylinder and dropping a 302 or 351 in it. Wanna get just an old grandma car that has a nice clean body and go from there. So picture just an ordinary 200 or 250 or whatever motor, whats involved in dropping the clevo in? Is it basically just getting the V8 mounts and a gearbox??? Are the crossmember gearbox supports the same or not? What sort of gearbox setup can I hook up to a clevo? preferably manual.

Diff upgrade necessary?

wish it was that easy, top loader or single rail would work
but you need to do the lot, diff, brakes and suspension all need changing

V8 Mounts
V8 throttle bar (or modify the 6 cyl one or use an XD cable bedal setup)
Crossmembers are the same
Top Loader is good
C4 Auto is also good - probably easier to get.
If the car has disk brakes already, they will be the same as V8 ones and will be fine. Otherwise you'll need to get some disk brakes, booster etc for it.
It'll need new front springs and probably shocks too.
Might need a bigger radiator.

All in all, a pretty easy conversion - even easier if you have a V8 donor car to work from...

The 6cyl diff will survive for quite a while if you look after it...

WAX,
i dunno where your throwing your money, but 1.5 k for an exhaust!!!!!
get real son...!

On a customer vehicle recently i had a FULL dual exhaust fitted for $370 ($400 if it required tips)

Now this wasn't your run of the mill 2 inch system, it was 2 1/2 each side indcluding mount etc!

At 1.5k as you quoted your getting taken to an expensive bar!

1k for a a C4-C10 auto... again your getting ripped! last price i got for a rebuild C4 was 450 bucks!!!

Honestly, the cheapest way to do a V8 conversion remains to buy a donor car with all the bits, then only replace that which needs it.

Cheers

Sheesh,
you could just about have one made over here and fly it over for less than that!

a 2.5 is a bit different, but then the price i quoted was for a dual 2.5. (1970 Boss 302)

Sounds like robbery.....maybe your exhaust centres are all owned by the fuel companies!

Cheers

I'd like to know where you got a C4 that'd handle any sort of power for $450... Unless the answer is "1982"

The best way is to get two cars. One with a good body, and the other being a v8 donor car that has all of the parts that you need.

I am guessing that the $1500 exhaust includes some type of extractors and the $370 does not?

Good call XC,
something i had not thought of...but are the extractors worth $1000 or more (honest question..last set i had came fitted)

we await the answer...and if it includes extractors/headers, then i am happy to take a seat to await another beer

Yes, a set of jet coated extractors costs around $1000.

Yes extractorsand everything else are needed and I want it to be done with nice new ,if possible, gear.
All the little bits and bobs are where the coin is.
You maybe can do it cheaper, but I want my car to be schmicco.
This conversion buissnes is on the surface easy and 'cheap' untill you actualy do it, then all the 'hidden costs' start to appear.

Someone here in Perth has a spare set of extractors laying arround, also a fan with thermocouple and some alternating brackets and the like
Sometimes a good cleanup of the shed can unearth some long forgotten treasures.
I did find a new V8 4 core HQ radiator/Clutch/preasureplate/suspensionparts etc. and all sorts of other gear from my HQ raceday's just last week!

My estimate on total costs of the conversion have been spot on.
So it is NOT a cheap option for sure, it does not save $$, but if a 6 cil is in great shape then it is an option to do.
But be prepared for the $$ needed.
