MIXED FORTUNES FOR FTR IN OPENING CANBERRA RACE
09 Jun, 2001

Ford Tickford Racing’s (FTR) Glenn Seton has taken fifth position in race one of the GMC 400 in Canberra.
Ford Tickford Racing’s (FTR) Glenn Seton has taken fifth position in race one of the GMC 400 in Canberra.

It was a far less successful day for teammate Steven Richards who finished in 26th position after losing a lap in the pits with damaged steering.

Fellow Ford driver Steven Johnson scored his debut win, with the Falcon of Craig Lowndes in second.

Seton was as high as third place, but a safety car period closed the field and Seton was unable to hold back Mark Skaife and Garth Tander.

Seton was caught out at the re-start of racing, when the safety car returned to the pits slower than expected.

This gave Skaife a faster run on the FTR #5 and he passed Seton on the following bend – Tander passed not long after.

“I was building up speed at the re-start and suddenly both Steven Johnson and Craig Lowndes jumped on the brakes as the safety car appeared to slow dramatically as it crossed to re-enter the pits,” said Seton.

“After Skaife and Tander passed me I settled back down and held onto fifth.

“My car was very strong and with two more races tomorrow I’m still in a very good position.

Teammate Steven Richards was well placed in the top-ten, but he damaged the steering of his Ford Falcon AUXR8 when he clipped one of the many tyre barriers that surround the Canberra street circuit.

“I simply went a little wide a touched the tyre barriers,” said Richards.

“It damaged the left front control arm on the steering and I had no other choice than to make a pit stop and have it fixed.

“The good thing about finishing in 26th is that I will start on the front row in tomorrow morning’s reverse grid race.

“If I can do well in that 25-lap race – I could be in a strong position for the final 50-lap race of the meeting.

“There is a still a lot of championship points on offer – so don’t count either Glenn or I out yet.

It was disappointing for Steven because he was running comfortably inside the top 10, but I suppose if he can race well tomorrow it may not be so bad.
