Hello Folks
I am the new guy on the block and I am glad to be here. I have an 89 Bronco Painted up to look like a Skunk ( so the wife say's ), It is stock except for a two inch lift under the springs. This is my first 4x4 so I have a lot to learn I hope this is the place the teaching will come from. Once I learn how to use this thing I will send in photo's of the Skunk.;)

Greetings all!

I have an '83XLT that is pretty much stock except I
had the "variable venturi" carb swapped out for
a Holley 4bbl... (yay!) If anybody has a VV get rid of it!! (believe me, I tried to fix it!)

variable venturi

I HATE THOSE DAMN VV CARBS! I have an 85 with the 351 H.O. 4bbl holley. Isn't that the variable venturi? This carb has been a major achilles' heel to this truck as long as it has been in my family. It can't be adjusted and makes the Bronco run terrible.

I would like to swap it, but MA emissions laws prevent that I think.
Sometimes if am driving it and a traffic light turns yellow, making me floor it to make the light, the engine almost seems to cut out for a second, and then runs fine afterwards. Is this a problem with the carb? If I were to toss an Edelbrock or something on there, would it be easily noticed by inspection stations? Would my stock air cleaner fit over it to hide it? I was wondering if anyone else has done this.. BTW this carb has been rebuilt/replaced several times.

Later, :wink2:

variable venturi

The variable venturi carb was an experiment only used for a few years. I do not believe that they were used after '83.

It was a 2bbl that used a bizarre pivoting door at the top to control the actual size of the venturis. Works great when it works. Problem is that Ford built in all of the controls to the EECIII system which had NO way to diag itself except pull it apart piece by piece. So, one malfunctioning part threw the carb (and timing, etc into a fit).

I spent a fortune trying to get it fixed (including rebuilding the carb). Eventually, I had replaced the carb with a 4bbl Holley, the intake manifold replaced with an Edelbrock, and replaced the distributor with one from an '86. And finally the truck passed emissions!!!! (YAY!)

In some states this might be illegal. In my state they don't look under the hood unless it fails. Besides, I am don't think that if they were to open the hood that they would know the difference.

regards,
reg

Just joined so I figured I check in.
I've got a '79 XLT Bronco that I'm just getting started on.
I'm putting a 4 speed back in to replace the non stock C-6
that was in it. Has a 351M but hope to set it up with a 460
later this year.
Also have an '89 Centurion F-350 Bronco Conversion that I posted a pic of in the rides section.
If you are interested check out the Centurion Club at

Thanks

I have a '84 II with the 2.8L 2bbl carb. Ahem, and only 46k miles! :) :) Spent a goddamn long time(almost 3 months) diagnosing the engine down to where it runs now. Bloody Ford experiments and carbs!

The truck was originally a 4 speed rig, but the previous owner swapped over to a rebuilt (supposedly) C-6. After the switch the C-6 fried and the guy who was going to re-rebuild it removed the tranny and then disappeared (with the tranny) That's how I got it so cheap.....$300. All I need is to put the tranny back in and put a soft top on it, the original hard top blew off on him on the freeway (another long story). Hope to have it on the road by first part of April so the Centurion can go in for paint and upholstery.

I have a 79 bronco that is basically stock. It has been through everything and still keeps tickin. I've had the valves float quite a few times and still no damage. The body's gone bad enough that we might be getting better gas mileage. In the next couple years I'm doing a full resto. It's got over 300K and has only gotten regular maintenance.

Well, looks like so far I have the only early Bronco here. I bought it from my father-in-law who bought it brand new. Quarters are cut, but besides that all original.
