I am trying to look for a new cam to match my new engine package. GT-40 Heads, 1.72 Roller Rockers, Cobra Intake, 65mm Throttle Body and 70mm MAF. Which cam would be best for general street use with the occasional drag meet. I have been told the Ford E303 isn't too bad, but what about the crane 2031 or crow version. Any help would be good. Thanks.

Hi,

I have the Crane 2031 in my ED XR8, with the 1.72 roller rockers (Yella Terra ST2027) and ported and polished heads (stock intake through)

The cam is very lumpy... doesnt have too much under 2 grand.

My car revs up VERY quickly though. (even goes to 6 grand)

currently have 151kw at the rear wheels, but when I get the new manifold, MAF and TB I should get a very good increase.

I have also lost 0.7secs on the 1/4 mile since getting the cam.

Good thing about this cam, is that it is suitable for supercharger (that is on my wish list along with a few other goodies)

I have a lot of specs on my web page (have a look at the "my xr8" section)

:s5 :s5 :s5

The E 303 is a fairly serious cam esp with those 1:7 r/rockers check into the inlet being under 220 @ 50 by 2 or so degrees.. o/k
Check p/valve clairance too..Mustangs in the States run real quick with std cam but with those rockers down to 12's..But with all the top valve gear ..

Has anyone run an E303 cam with 1.72 ratio. I am a little bit concerned about clearance. The E303 specs are 220 degrees/ 282 degrees with 0.498" lift on both intake and exhaust. Add the 1.72 ratio and you are looking at 0.535" lift. XR8chic, do you know the specs of your cam. Also what cams do Herrod use on their 250kw etc cars?

Yes, you will have piston to valve clearance problems with stock pistons. The F303 with .512 lift and 228deg is the largest you can safely use with stock type pistons.

With 1:7 rockers??? Alphabet cams [Ford svo] are all really designed to run 1:6.[We always want MORE] But with piston notching you can 1:7's,mind you it always pays to CHECK.. Lift is not always the problem it's also the overlap. With roller cam they open real quick !! What specs the 2031? from memory it's a duel patern where the inlet is 218/220 exh?? should be good street cam..
Smaller valves have slightly more clearence too.

Ask the manufacturer of the cam, they'v done heaps of development..

The question was; how would the E303 go with 1.7's was it not?

Overlap does make a difference yes. That's why I listed the duration @ .050" of the F303 which is the biggest you can safely use without notching the stock pistons. I suspect similar problems with contact at similar lift as the F303 lift because of the E303s' 110deg Lobe separation.

Pete I wasn't disagreeing with you.Was trying to expain in more simple terms..

E 303 is a good all round cam!!
Remember Sprints have less duration than std efi cam and 1:7 rockers,so thats something to go by and pull 14:3's Well we have one here that does..

I seem to be having the same motor as XR8chic.....

I have the Crane 2031 sitting next to me, which by the sound of it is the cam I wanted.
Hopefully in the next two weeks I'm getting the inlet manifolds.

XR8chic, What sort of flywheel kw's do ya think ya got?

Err, have you considered using the Cobra/Sprint cam? After all it was developed for that specific combination and I can vouch for its streetability and power potential. ;)

Alternatively I have heard many good things about the 2031 for this setup and if I was pressed to pick an off the shelf cam using those parts that would be the one.

On www.corral.net / message forums / Windsor.. they have this exact thread there.I have seen more debates on cam's than almost anything els. Alot depends on what the rest of the package is or what latter you intend doing. We don't have a big selection here down under and our exchange rate is not that good either..& postage!!

My opinion If you want to port your heads $$$ and spend mega on mafs, ecu,hi flo fuel pump, injectors etc go for it. But I recon you can get heaps with std cam with 1:7 rockers and the rest Cobra/Sprint as Anakha said..
Have good power from zero to 5k.rpm+
You'r new job keeping you bussy buddy ???

EDXR8 r u the guy that bought my inlet ??

Yeah, I bought your inlet. It should be going on this weekend. As for the cam, I might see how the stock one goes with the 1.7 rockers before upgrading. I have been following the corral discussions regarding this topic, but it seems they go for E303 of F303 cams with 1.6 rockers or the crane 2031 with 1.7's. I don't really want to go for the 2031 after what XR8chic said. I am still interested in the Sprint cam though if I can get some specs. I would imagine it would be around the crane 2020 or 2030 with less lift though.
