Hello everyone, just wanna see what kind of V6's we have on here. I'll start first. I own a 1990 Ford Probe LX. It's got the 3.0L V6 (Vulcan - not Duratec) engine. It's a 12v, pushrod, cast iron, cast block, OHV. Been around forever, pretty tough, even in these frigid Alaskan winters (cast iron helps). Overall, in the 5 or so years that I've owned it, I've been satisfied.

Other Ford V6's I've owned in the past was a 1991 Explorer with the 4.0. And a 93' Probe GT with the 2.5L which is really a Mazda motor.

5.0 Rangers are sweet, I've seen a few of them here around town. Ford really needs a smaller V8 Ranger on the market to compete with trucks like the V8 Dakotas.

I could imagine that in the Ranger the 3.0 would be somewhat underpowered, but in the Probe it makes quite a nice combo.

I've never heard of a 4.2 Windsor before. I know that some of the F150's have inline 6's? The only Windsor that I've ever heard of is the 351. Any links or resources you can point to me so that I can check it out?

I have Ford's old 3.8L OHV V6 in my '94 T-Bird; it has only 140HP @ 3800RPM but it puts out a strong 215 lb-ft of torque at only 2400RPM which, in my experience, has proven the engine is no slouch when you need to get going, in spite of reviews over the years that say otherwise. As long as I have the ability to do 0-60MPH in under ten seconds, I'll be happy. Aside from that, the engine is over ten years old now and has over 124,000 miles on it. After all this time and mileage it still runs perfectly and still has yet to develop a problem.

'97 Tuarus Duratec Great car has plenty of power. A bit heavy. But with a stock roll cage I think the weight is worth it.

2.5L out of Ford Telstar TX5. Found in Mazda 626, Probe and MX6. Does pretty well, 164hp stock, and only dragging around ~1250kg of car.

AAHHH The TX5 slimmer brother of the Probe
Probe weighs just a tad under 1400kgs or for the US readers 2800lbs
Had it dyno'd a few weeks back on the shootout mode 3 runs the best was 99.5 Front wheel Kilowatts and the worst was 97 FWKW using Shell Optimax and a K&N Filter only Out side temp was at 23deg C
Being a FWD manual you loose approx 20% thru the drive train whick puts it at about 125 Fly wheel Kilowatts

Quoted as 121kw at the fly in the manual and everywhere else i've read. Which means that you might have picked up a few with the filter. Have you done anything else to your probe Alan? I've had the exhaust done, and picking up the filter probably tomorrow.

Don't know where to go to next, been thinking about a throttle body, but haven't found to much info to work with in Aus, prob have to look at getting imported from US. Ever heard of CZT racing? Apparently they've got a 65mm TB which picks up ~7hp at the wheels, $200USD shipped. Also been thinking MX3 flywheel, drop a few pounds from the stockie.

Would like to get to around 140kw at the fly with just bolt ons and add-ins, after that KLZE heads, cams and IM might be next.

Cheers,
Luke

Luke,

To the best of my knowledge it is stock apart from the filter the only thing I had done to the Probe was stick 2 bottles of fuel cleaner in the tank and ran the tank nearly dry filled up again and put another bottle of cleaner in the tank, decarbon the IM using the instructions found here , top web site for all things V6 Probe / Mazda related http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dorothy.bradbury/probemx/index.htm
and a Kero flush a few months back which in my opinion did quieten the HLA's and seemed to loosen it up to rev more freely and a while back I replaced the fuel filter which was totally clagged up. As you are aware the Probe is not that common in Aust and finding bolt on go fast bits is hard and espensive
The KL03 motor is fairly strong so if you want to wack a hairdryer on it or a small supercharger on it.

My wife drives a 2001 Ford Escape with the 3.0L Duratec. At 200hp/200tq, it's pretty snappy and has great low-end torque. My only complaint is that I wish the fun didn't end a 6250rpm. I the 1-2 gear change, the engine is still making gobs of power when it crashes against the rev limiter.

I would love to see what a supercharger and exhaust could do to this engine....

I have just purchased a 93 TX5 Ghia with the 2.5 litre V-6. It is sweet with the 5 Speed manual. I've only ever owned 4's before and an XF Falcon with the 4.1 litre carby six on Gas so this is great! I love the growl above 4 grand :)
