Hi we are trying to determine whether or not our XA ute has the original V8 motor. We have tried to follow up using the vin number but it doesn't seem to have enough numbers/letters. Has anybody come across this problem and may have any suggestions?

Trying to match up numbers on old cars can be a mission as often things weren't done accurately or even at all back then.

Did you find any numbers stamped on the engine. Usually it is on the front of the block near the fuel pump. Sometimes back in the day there were no stamps put on engines so that would make it difficult to know for sure.

To make it even more interesting they changed the way the stampings were done from Jan 1971. Earlier they had a system where the VIN and body prefix numbers were different but later they merged them so they were the same.

Earlier cars the engine stamp should match the body prefix numbers and later all the numbers should match up to the VIN.

VIN is stamped on the spring tower.

Hope some of this may help.
