I am in the market for an XG ute. I have been looking on the regular online car sales databases and something I have noticed is that there seems to be two levels of pricing for an XG.

One level fits within the redbook prices around 5-6,000 the other level is around 11-12,000. I do not understand why there is such a huge variation. WHat are people thinking selling them for twice as much as what they are really worth? None of the ads say anything too special about the utes (no twin turbo, stroked 400+ ci windsors under the bonnet, etc). It has me stumped.

Is there any reason why the more expensive ones should be more expensive, besides whatever brand of stupidity the sellers have been snorting? Like factory specials or something (none of them are XR6s)?

edit: used english this time

It is probably the engine specs. They probably have a 3.9lt motor in the early models and a 4.0lt in the later models. But for 10g i would be looking at an XH.

All XGs were 4.0. All I can say is they must be the best immaculate, low-km, optioned-up utes you've ever seen to be asking that money.

One could be ex builders, the other could be "never used the tray" brigade.

As for the prices, remember that is their asking price; if you see one you like at 11,000 in mickey mouse condition, in the negotiation phase, point out how much it is worth to you, and leave that offer with them.

There are some good ones with an unmarked tray out there, and there are some that look like they build entire suburbs in Sydney...

As for those sales data bases, price a phase III HO ;)

Yeah what EBXR said^^^^^

Most have been worked all/most their life, and some have only seen the odd moving house job.....Still, I wouldn't pay anymore than 9k for a mint S-pack

Like WINGED said, I'd be looking at XH's if you can strech the budget that far.
They are a much nicer ute with the SLAS (or whatever its called) front suspension and rack 'n pinion steering aswell. Also had nicer dash, EF seats (i think) and probably EF stereo too

I paid 6g for a completely stock, yet fairly good condition XG. Nothing special except it had a tray liner, whick meant the metal underneath was in really good condition, no dents etc. People after 10g+ are dreaming unless they are show cars, or have done a V8 conversion (correct me if im wrong, but i heard all XG's were 6cyl) 7-8g should get you a mint condition one with mags/stereo/gas etc.

All xg's were 4.0's. If these overpriced utes are selling then theres you're anwser, people will put whatever price they think they can for things, and if someone buys it, half their luck. The red book etc mean nothing, things are worth what people are willing to pay. For the record, I bought an ex builders xh ute, two years ago, for 6g.......
