Since getting the AUII XR6 HP, I haven't had the chance to have a really good long distance fang and see how the fuel economy was - until last weekend. I left Penrith with a full tank of Optimax and 3 other passengers, and as I usually expect, had a DTE of about 650. Naturally, with heaps of inner city hooning, this is about 200-250k's out of whack. My previous best from the car was 523k's with about 20 DTE to go, having done roughly 300k's of freeway (Central Coast and back and some M4).

At about 160k's down the Hume, my DTE was reading 636. Assuming the DTE is pretty accurate, that's an 800km tank, or 8.5l for every 100ks at that point in time.

I didn't refill again until the trip back. I'd done a reasonable amount of solid hooning about in Canberra (hard not to when your mate has a VR SS ;) ), so by the time I stopped I had 540k's and 140 DTE, roughly 10l every 100. When I took off again, the DTE read 750. However, but the time I reached the Penrith/Cambelltown exit, my distance travelled + DTE was 850k's, or 8l per 100k's. Again, that will balance out when I return to city driving, but if the DTE is accurate and my maths haven't failed me, then 8-8.5l per 100k's isn't bad going.

Be interesting to see how it goes during the October trip to Melbourne.

With my car (stock AU1 Fairmont) I'm still not convinced the fuel economy is ok. In my last fill I did 340km with 65km showing in the DTE. It was all city driving with no more than 1/3 of the km done on 70-90km/h zone roads. I used optimax in this fill with the auto set to economy and I tried to keep the revs below 2000.

Does this sound normal?

About three months ago I put in a K&N panel filter, would that affect fuel economy?

I drive a stock 96 EL and get 520-560km per tank. Everytime i fill up its close to 60 liters! this is a mixtre of city and highway driving!

Yeah, with my baby mixture of city driving and highway i get 10L/100km, i'm pretty happy and considering i give it abit as well. But my baby is a manual.

Aussie Falcon,
I doubt the K&N filter will make the car take more fuel. Thast my guess. Did the car get better economy before the filter?

plug gap

Check your plug gap on AU I & AUII'S . Should be 1.3 for best fuel economy. Ford plugs are gapped at 1.0 out of the box.

give it a go and I think youll be impressed with the difference!!

whats this talk of 8/100 10/100...

I must admit with all the engine mods i get around 320 ks out of city driving, and that includes some hard pulls in 1st and 2nd and country driving I would get close to 730ks outa the tank!

Not bad really considering in 5th I on 100ks its sits on 2200rpm.

The 6 speed should improve that but it just goes to show how good Herrod mapped the Unichip after all the mods!

And that is incredible milage and a great endorsement of the work done to Laminges car.

High 600 to low 700 on laminges car is fantastic.
Can't wait to see what Pete gets from his stroker and it will be interesting to see how much of a difference the 6 th gear makes to Gaz's milage on the highway.

Look forward to reading about both

I am getting 300km per tank no matter which type of fuel I use
My car is a AUII xr6 hp auto with only 1600km on the clock , all city driving...

I am getting 350 Km out of the XR8 220 (2500 K's on the clock) for city driving.

This is for a 50 litre fill, still have around 50 k's left on the DTE.

600/700 on a country trip, that sounds damm good laminge. Going to Winton for the six hour in acouple of weeks, will have to see what I can get on that.

Herrod lean out the standard fuel maps via the Unichip which gives improved economy and better power. The LS1 boys are doing the same either using Unichip or MAF sensors. My car will be using more fuel than this since my EEC is standard - the MAF in the EEC system is adjusting for the stroker perfectly, however it is still on the rich side.

I have an AUII XR6 HP and I get arounf 450Km's out of a tank with a mixture of city and freeway driving - although it's mainly peak hour so there's not a lot of driving constantly at 100KPH.

There's about 12,500 kays on the clock.

My ED manual gets about 450 around town giving it a go a fair bit, and on the highway it gets about 800k sitting on 115 to 120.
Its got a bigger exhaust, k&n filter better sprk plugs, and it helps.
I could get around 850 easy if I sat on 90 to 100, but thats too slow, i cant handle that speed.

For my next purchase i was considering an EL XR6. However, i am not sure about a manual or an auto. I want the manual because the car would be quicker and it would deliver better economy, i am just not sure if the shift quality is too baulky and cumbersome and would become a pain in only city driving

Assuming you do have this car (i think you do) what are your thoughts on the manual?

What i really would like is a Focus RS (Drooooooollllllll) or a Ford Puma ST160 (The forgotten Ford)

Yes my baby is a manual and it has the T5OD box.
My comment is yes it is alittle baulky but the shift is precise, since this gearbox is mated to the V8 as well, you can't expect this to be a slick shifting box like a Honda Integra.
Take it from the Holden manual box in the VR feels crap despite it's shorter stick compared to the Falcons T5OD.
I drive from Moutains to Alexandria at times and driving through the tight streets i've never had a problem, and gear shifts are brilliant, even when cold.

Agreed, the T5 box is a great unit. One thing that niggles me is the slightly long throw, but that can be sorted with a B&M ripper shifter kit .

MY LT50 IS LUCKY TO GET 500 KM ON HIGHWAY DRIVING .I MUST FIND SOME TIME TO TUNE THIS VEHICLE PROPERLY
