I have noticed that my speedo is out by about 4 - 5 kph.

Is this an error with all the BA's or just a few.

I would like to get installed the dash cluster that can change the trip meter to a digital speedo.

Does anyone know where I can get this done.

All help would be gratefully accepted.

Two ways to check the speedo.

1. Set the car on cruise on about 105 kph & travel under one of those speedo check booms over the Hume Highway or the Western Highway near Ballarat.

This is firstly what made me wonder the speedo was incorrect, it showed me at travelling 4 kph slower than what was actually recorded on the speedo.

2. Set the cruise on 105 kph or 110 kph.

Reset the average speed button & have a look at what the average speed is that you are doing at that point of time.

If you are travelling with the cruise on a particular speed, it is physically impossble for the average speed to be different.

Lets say to are going 105 kph & you reset the average speed button, there is no way it should show your speed as 101 kph.

I would like to install the digital cluster that also incorporates the trip & odometer.

Where can I get one of those.

I know that they exist because the police cars have them installed.

XR6, is it calibrated down - in otehr words, is your speedo showing that you are going 4-5km faster than what you are actually going?

It used to be a sort of standard of some of the auto manufactures to set their speedos a little higher to "protect" their owners from the police - a lot of people tend to set their cruise control to about 121kmh in NSW - 122km/h is the "nick-able" speed - hence being out 4 or 5km, your doing 116/117kmh, and not worth police time, unless its a camera......

Likewise with your victorian 3km tollerances, it may be a gift in disguise.

thoes fricken camera's on the bridges are crap..

i was in a work truck heading home from a windmill farm project that were doing atm about 50km from ballarat.. anyways the truck cuts out at 102km/h, i went under the first bridge it came up with doing 111km/h.. i was doing about 95km/h....ummm next bridge set the throttle control on right on 102 this time is said 97..

i dont think your speedo is out mate..

them camera's are crap!

Those average speed things in my view are useless. They always read slow in mine and in my parents ED Fairmont. Even if you have the cruise control on and dont stop they will read far to low.

I'm pretty sure that to get the digital readout, you just need the car changed to "police mode", ie. you don't need a new cluster. I've heard that dealers will do this if you ask them to (but I've never asked so I don't actually know for sure.)

Also are you sure that your speedo is out by 4km/h? Or is it out by a percentage? If it's out by 4% for example, then at 60km/h it would only be out by 2.4km/h.

Some car reviews that I've read list the car's "actual speed at indicated 100km/h". I don't think I've seen one that was listed as 100km/h. Most are about 97-99.

I also read somewhere that the change in diameter between a new tyre and a worn tyre is enough to put off your speedo by about 1-2%.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the speedo being out slightly is not specific to Falcons, but rather is common to all cars.

My speedo is always about 7 km/h faster than the readout on those bridges, i heard a while back, that the police had deliberately calibrated them high, so everyone thinks they are not speeding and they all get done by speed cameras. Don't know how much truth there is to that, but that's what i heard.

Best check is with a gps on a dead flat road on cruise, digital mode may be like the commodores where you start it with the mode and up arrow depressed and get the diagnostics and speed all digital, ask the dealer

I thought it was just the way it was, that the speedos where out by 4-5klms an hour, I guess an undocumented safety feature, and I guess saves a law suit when some sues them for getting a fine, well I think its a good thing, saves getting an unexpected fine, here in VIC they get you for 6ks over.
