2000 Focus Misfire Codes

Hi all, we bought a 2000 focus zx3 a couple years ago. It is the 2.0 DOHC zetec. we have had nothing but trouble with the car from almost day one. It has been in and out of the shop with no luck in getting it fixed. It has been to the dealer and 3 or 4 other shops. we have spent more on shop fee's than we paid for the car. I am about ready to pull out the big tractor and flatten this thing out and haul it in for scrap iron.

Ok when this little car runs good it runs great and is fun to drive. it runs great for 3 or 400 miles then it has a lose of power and we are lucky to get 30Mph out of it. the dealer erplaced the Mass airflow sensor we replaced the fuel pump all spark plugs and wires. last time in the shop it gave codes P0301,p0304 and the code for running rich forgot the code sorry. i am thinking this is the coil pack. but i guess i would like to know can a bad coil work great for a few hundred miles then take a dump and then let it sit over night and run fine again? please help. thanks

Whae the coil pack cools off, it doesn't break down as easily. They have been known to crack and different humidity can cause problems. If it's been the same problem, it's best to take it back to the same place so they can see what has to be done and they will cut the cost due to it being the same problem.

As suggested , dampness can give problems with coils . There was a fault on early Focus cars where the washers jets were leaking onto plug wells . Double check your pigtail connection to the coil pack?

If it's the original coil pack, then you probably ought to go ahead & replace it.
The one on my Escape was bad - the car was hesitating & had a lack of power under load: replacing the coil pack solved the problem. 2.0L Zetec engine. P0304 code. Supposedly, some auto parts stores can check it... not sure what the test, though.

I compared the primary & secondary resistance values of the new & old units, but they tested the same. Mine was in good physical/visual condition & the wet down test for arcing in the dark didn't reveal anything amiss. It wasn't burned on the underside or anything. I guess it was just worn out.
