Hey guys, I’m new to the whole P71 world and I’m looking at a 2010 P71 that was used for a sheriff department. The odometer works intermittently, which I have read is a fairly common issue. The guy says it has 230k miles on it, but the idle hours are unknown. They are asking $2500 for this, it has some dents and dings, but is it worth that price? It also needs a new set of tires. Thanks for any info

It might have 400,000 miles. If it has dents and dings and needs tires, I would not pay more than 1500. I would really recommend finding one with decent tires, a working odometer, and less than 200,000 miles.

Sorry, i wasn’t thinking right when I posted about the odometer.. it wasn’t working when I looked at it but allegedly it works intermittently. Thanks for the input, the one I end up getting is going to be my first car so I don’t have a very big budget (about 2500-3k) thanks again

@Cardude1827 Just wanna say I just signed up specifically to respond to your post because you said its going to be your first car. First off, good f'in choice secondly I wouldn't tell you NOT to do something you really wanted to do, but I will tell you that if you wait for a better deal on a newer interceptor, it will come much easier than you think and you will find MUCH better deals on plenty of cvpi's. Ones without the speed problem, with less than id say 150k or lower would be pretty ideal. In my opinion, if the engine hours are "unknown" in my mind that just says well, its probably a hell of a lot of hours and even worse you'll never actually know. Knowing it was a police or fleet vehicle, its pretty safe to say that a large percentage of them will have quite a bit of engine hours / miles. Police spend the entire day driving these cars around, or worse sitting at idle in park, with the air conditioning on, etc etc etc. That being said, because its a government vehicle until its sold based on a either a certain milage reached or certain amount of time in service, you can also usually look up where it came from and their maintenance schedule on the car and know that for the most part what has been changed, hasn't, needs to be soon etc. These things are EVERYWHERE man, and you can really get them for much cheaper in better condition, even with new decent paint.

Long story short I would just hold off a bit longer, and search the internet for police auctions in your area and I think you will be pretty glad you did and much happier with your choice. plus, then you'll have some money leftover afterward.

Thank you guys, for all the info. This one has already sold so I’ll be keeping my eyes open... do you guys happen to know if there’s a way to check idle hours on the pre 06’ models that don’t have the display? Would it be possible to see them with an OBD reader? Thanks a lot again guys :)

06 was the first year that tracked idle hours unfortuneately. I agree, but straight from an auction and not a third party. I bought mine directly from an auction for 1900. It runs like a top and needs nothing except for same paint correction here and there. Overall I’m happy.

Just for comparison, we inherited a 2001 Grand Marquis LX from my Mother in Law. Actual mileage 53,000 with almost new tires. We replaced the air bags, water pump, and brakes all around. Good paint with some small blemishes. Clean interior and trunk, no rust. Car Max offered us $2,500 last week. We are keeping the car, but there are similar deals out there.
