Fan comes on when I open door

I have a 2012 Focus SEL with 160,000 miles and I have owned it for about 2 years. Last week I opened the door to get in the car and I heard a fan start. I closed the door and opened it again and no fan. It has happened only twice. The car was idle for about 2 hours when I opened the door. I’m nervous that I have some type of electrical problem

Well, from the looks of the schematic, it looks like wither the engine was still hot or you may have a bad sensor. Do you know which fan was running and at what spped? Makes a difference in how to diagnose it, as there are other possibilities as well. BTW, ignore the thick black line in the middle, I had to piece the schematic together.

The fan kicks on when you open the drivers door and continues to run. It fluctuates from low speed to high properly. If you turn the engine off and exit the passenger side then the fan goes off as it should. I have swapped the fan relay with no change. I am thinking about the fan control module next. Any idea what the problem is?

Bumping this thread in hopes of a solution. I have a 2012 Focus that did the same thing. The car was off for about an hour after driving in February and the cooling fan was not running when I parked. When I opened the passenger door with the keys not even in the car, the fan kicked in high. Closed the door and the fan went off. I opened the driver's door and fan also cam on. Hasn't happened since. I just replaced the thermostat due to a P0128 DTC, but wondering if the ECT sensor needs a look. Seems odd to have two coolant related symptoms in close proximity. Lastly, my AC was very weak last summer and I'm wondering if this is all related. If the fan doesn't operate properly it would cause AC problems, right? I turned the AC on yesterday and I did not hear the fan kick on. But I know the fan motor and relay had to work at least twice because it came on when I opened the doors, right? If anyone has conclusively resolved the door open fan on routine I'd very much like to read the solution.

Thank you, Steve

I have the same problem with a 2014 Ford Focus. I changed the control modual and the fan. The big problem is that the fan does not cool all the time so the car overheats sometimes. It also does not come on for the AC sometimes so the AC blows warm air. I finally got a schematic diagram for the circuit so now I can get into it more. It looks like the PCM has an issue or there is some weird grounding issue. The fan turns on in the morning when I open the driverside door, so I know that it works. I don't have a PCM to try, and I doubt I would replace it even if it's the cause. I would probably find some way to just wire the fan to always run when the car is on.

My 2012 Ford Focus SE has been through three+ mechanics to get the engine light off for a yearly required State Inspection. The last guy replaced the Air fuel ratio sensor (?) and I drove it 50+ miles to somehow pass inspection -barely. The engine light came back on next day and has stayed on. This engine fan/opening door crap has been going on for a year or so along with accompanying on/off A/C temp ranges. This Ford Forum e-mail thread goes back 3+ years, is there an answer to this problem? Mr. Ford? Thanks in advance.

I started my 2012 Ford Focus journey sometimes last year.
The cooling fan stays on for more than 3 mins even after locking the door and even starts the moment I unlock the door.(I thought this was normal)
Later started having intermittent issues with overheating (here today gone tomorrow)

Finally, I replaced the fan control module and all the observations above stopped.
