Hight Oil Pressure

Hi Guys,
Just drove home after a nice new years party and the Oil pressure guage on my EL Fairmont was was just touching the upper orange zone for the whole way home (actualy it did drop down to it's normal positon periodicaly but then climbed right back up). It was doing this a bit about a week ago, I thought the filter might be blocked so I changed the filter and put a sump worth of Shell Helix Ultra in to it but today it was doing it worse then ever. Any ideas what could be causing this high oil pressure?

Thanks,
Month

Mine did exactly the same a few months ago and it turned out to be a dirty connection on the sender unit. If they get a weak signal they read high rather than low. If there's no oil under the car it's probably electrical.

That sounds weird because if u earth the oil pressure sender wire, then the gauge will read at the highest point, so if it had a dirty connection, the resistance would increase and i would think the guage would then read lower, much how the sender works. ie. higher the pressure the less resistance.

not saying your wrong, maybe its different with the 5.0Ls...

interesting....

MontEL - have u found the problem?

My El XR6 has the same problem, Have changed the sender and no joy. My freind works at Ford and he says its the actual oil pressure guage. Its a common problem with EF ELs. To get it fixed you have to pull out the instrument cluster and send it away. but to be sure get someone to do an oil pressure test on the motor as well. :hy:

Yep, the sparky changed the connection on the sender and it hasn't done it since. Im just going on what i got told but $70 and it's been perfect since.

hi there, my EF fairmont did the same thing when i changed the oil a while back i used 0-25 or something. What had always been used by the previos owner.

I spoke to my friend a grease monkey and he checked the car and said it was fine must be the gauge... Next service changed my oil and grade to 25-60 and not a problem since. No idea why just did. smooth sailing ever since

my ef xr6 did the same on the weekend. it was a bit odd because i went on a cruise and it was 35c and i had the air con on doing 120-140 for about 60 kms, when i slwoed down to about 100-110 the pressure stopped rising and stayed constent ever since. the only time it had a major affect was when i put the foot down to go up a hill it rose to 7.

Do all EF Falcons have an oil pressure gauge or am i missing something here?
Had the same on my AU1 XR6.

Changed oil - nothing,
Changed oil pressure sender unit - nothing,
Added a cable between block & body for better earth - fixed !!!

i have been told that it doesnt create a major concern with high oil pressure. that doesnt sound right!what to you guys say to that??? im just intrested thats all. i have been told that oil pressure sensor is common on the efs so im gonna get mine changed i think?? does a sparky have to do that?

Hey, I have had similar earthing issues with my EL XR6. I had it on a dyno for an igntion problem and, since the guy had never seen the car before, he first ran a few basic checks. When he checked the oxygen sensor he said it was giving erroneous readings, whereupon he promptly grabbed the earth cable that connects to the engine (behind the p/s pump) and gave it a good twist. In doing so he improved the connection and the O2 sensor came good. He must have seen it before! He advised me to provide an extra earth from the negative battery post to the engine block to provide a better earth reference for touchy things like the O2 sensor and as you see here, possibly the instruments. In spite of the lead carrying hundreds of amps when cranking, it can go higher resistance thus affecting the things that draw just milliamps, like instruments!
