To anyone else interested, I've managed to answer my own query with Wikipedia. Damned if I know why I didn't think of checkin' out Wikipedia before, but in any case, it has the list, & can be seen here:

Fords first championship was won in 1965 by Ned Jarrett in a Ford Galaxie, no doubt powered by the mighty 427 motor. There have been 58 championships held since 1949 & Ford has, unfortunately, only managed to win 8 of them. Richard 'The King' Petty & Dale Earnhardt are the sports winningest drivers with 7 titles each.

there is the main series list of former champions from the NASCAR website - the only name that is missing is Jimmie Johnson who won the championship this year

 

Well, actually David Pearson is the 2nd most winningest driver in NASCAR history with only 3 championships and he drove a Ford for the Wood Brothers as well as a few other teams for the majority of his career.
