Whats the deal with Mufflers and Resonators and how do they change the note??

Hey,

I just had a exhaust built (2.5" pipes, genie's, one muffler, one resonator) and I told the guy to make it sound like the new xr8's (you know in the add when it burbles off in the end)...now i think it is pritty close, but its not loud enough ...so what I want to do is keep the SAME note, but make it louder/deeper. Does that mean I have get rid of the muffler, or have the rear resonator cut out, or something totally different?!?!?!

Dont get me wrong, i dont really want it to be ricer loud, but a bit louder if you know what I mean...

Thoughts/opinions?

Thanks

Bassically bigger exhaust, esp tail pipe from muffler. Yes can replace rear std resonator with an after market high flow or straight pipe..

Be careful removing resonators, your head can explode if you happen upon the particular frequency that the resonator is tuned to. You have a straight through muffler I take it? The resonator will change the note, I know that from experience. I'm not sure about the muffler 'tho. That said, it is cheap to remove the rear resonator (it cost me $60)... you could always give it a go and if you don't like it, bung it back in again and try something else.

yeh Its straight through - was going to remove the resonantor straight away, but i dont want an annoying drone. I like the current tone it has, but just want a little louder...i may just remove it and if i dont like it, put it back on....

I think the std resonater does have some sort of baffles?? So removing it with straight through muffler will possibly droan[Im sure it will] I would fit an aftermarket low restrictive resonator in its place..

The resonator that went it (from what I could see, had abffles and was filled with what looked like fibre glass....I have a mercury hotdog lying around at home from my 6 cyl. so maybe I should try that...what do you think?

How olds the system? Wait for it to carbon up and it'll get louder.

The system is roughly 500kms old - how does carboning it up make it sound any different?

Another 500-1000k's and it'll be carboned up nicely. The carbon reduces the effectiveness of the mufflers/resonators.

When I had the system done on the XB it was quiet for a V8. After a couple of thousand k's it's sounds nicer and also louder.

New cars take longer to carbon up due to cat, and unleaded petrol.

My system isnt haw i like it on my i6, spent near on $1k so far :( See how it sounds after a few 1000ks

Definitely wait for it to carbon up.

Got the old XF sounding just right on first go.. brilliant exhaust place. They forgot to mention the thing would double volume several months down the track!!!! His words were "let it bed in.. will get slightly louder" pfft!

Still sounded good tho *grin*

when i first bought my eb, the prev owners had the resonator removed and it droned really bad. but since then i've put HM headers in it and it's taken the drone away(sounds great actually, nice pops and burbles when slowing down). but it still sounds soft because of the muffler. i'm not sure if the muffler is standard or not.

it sounds alright and i'm afraid that if i change the muffler, it will be heaps loudner, and the car will sound crap, so that everyone can hear how crap it sounds.

yeah I know what you mean...thats what Im afraid of...i dont want to lose the note it currently has....and dont it want it too sound too ricey (read really really loud and annoying)

Like I said, i'm gonna leave mine for a 1000kms or so, and see what I think...i'll keep u posted...
