Where to get Auto serviced?

Hey guys, my auto is playing up and I was wondering where should I go to get my auto looked at?

Would I have to go to a specific auto transmission place, or do normal mechanics work on transmissions and related parts (kickdown cables.. ect..).

What do you mean by "playing up"? Regarding repairs, depends on the ability of the mechanic.
What's the colour of the fluid, does it smell like burnt toast? A complete fluid change is the best starting point in these situations.
