Real stupid question coming up................ please excuse me ignorance....:fraz:

What exactly is a "MODULAR" v8? Where does the term come from and what does it mean?

What type of V8s do you classify the windsors or the holdens?

TIA.

I think you will find it has more to do with interchangeability, in particular the heads.
That is why FPV could fit mustang cobra heads on a 5.4 block. The bore spacing allow this to happen

Overhead came mean they are overhead cams.

A modular engine makes for many interchangeable components such as pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, oil pumps, valvetrain parts, water pumps, etc. However, not all components are interchangeable with the 4.6L car family of engines due to the desire to increase robustness in certain areas of the engines for the more severe usage they would expect to see in the trucks.

ajor points of interest on the modular engines:
* All cylinder blocks have deep skirts with cross-bolted main caps for rigidity
* DOHC engines have aluminum cylinder blocks
* SOHC engines have cast iron cylinder blocks
* All cylinder heads are aluminum
* All valvetrains are of the hydraulic roller-finger-follower type for reduced friction and zero maintenance
* All accessories are rigidly mounted directly to the block with no brackets for improved NVH and cost
* Very long head bolts are used to reduce distortion of the cylinder bores and provide improved sealing

lunaticsvt do all the DOHC mod motors run alloy block's, my understanding was that only the 4.6L cobra motor ran the alloy block and the 5.4L dohc has an iron block. 03-4 cobras run an iron block dont they.

Modular means that they can be built in different configurations eg. There is a Modular V8 and a V10 and if they wanted to they could make a V6,V12 etc. Interchangability of parts and configurations is where the term Modular came from. That information came straight out of the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalogue.
